The novel's protagonist is a newspaper reporter who has a sizzling affair with a promiscuous assistant district attorney, much younger than he is, while both are involved in the investigation of a serial killer who always leaves a note saying, "Who's Sorry Now?" on the bodies of his victims -- all drug addicts. The killer proclaims that by slaying the addicts he is doing their families a favor by removing their biggest headache. Complicating the story further is that the reporter's wife and son are addicts and he has to deal with them while covering the story and having his affair. The reporter is also a playwright. Thus the novel not only tells how families are affected by addiction and deals with a blighted love affair, but also reveals insights into the worlds of theater and journalism.
