Book excerpt: This collection of distinctive images by Keith Kovach captures the city of Vienna as you've never seen it before. Produced by Kovach in January and February 2015 in Vienna, Austria, the photographs are the result of a grant from the Austrian Fulbright Commission and Quartier21/MuseumsQuartier Artist-in-Residence 2015. Each image was created to stand on its own as a compelling print. But compiled in this book, which also includes a daily journal written by the artist's wife, they compose a vibrant portrait of the city-a symphony of heightened awareness, revealing hidden things and reveling in invisibility through familiarity-that celebrates daily life in the "City of Dreams." The collection gets at the heartbeat of the city by weaving street scenes and high-rises with the elegant palaces Vienna is famous for-often including tourists having their pictures taken in the frame. Introducing a new style called Neo-Biedermeier photography, Kovach riffs on the concept of street photography, seeking out ordinariness and developing images that instill commonplace moments encountered within the urban landscape with uncommon vibrancy. The result is visual media that speaks of everyday experiences in a language that elevates them to the level of evocative art.
