Book excerpt: A trauma preparedness training was created to support resilience capacities for unarmed civilian protection (UCP) workers given the traumatic exposure that comes with engaging in their work. The theoretical framework used the five principles of psychological first aid to organize and inform the creation of five psychoeducation modules. Each module focuses on trauma preparedness underpinned by a review of psychophysiological, cognitive-affective, and social psychological theories related to stress, trauma, and resilience. The training format used scenarios and composite characters to provide a thorough evidence-based program of trauma informed psychoeducation and skill building and includes 94 slides in a PowerPoint presentation. The training was developed specifically to meet the needs of the Nonviolent Peaceforce (NP), a non-profit UCP organization, whose staff provided consultation and feedback for this project. More broadly, the training modules also provide a framework for trauma resilience training for those engaged in UCP and other humanitarian endeavors working in areas experiencing armed conflict.
