Their importance in their own time, however, has not been mirrored in the work of historians of Canada, who have been reluctant to consider women and religion as joint historical subjects worthy of an investigation. This paper examines the "Minutes of the West Lake Meetings of Friends" held by members of the Society of Friends (Quakers) in Upper Canada, Prince Edward County, for the years 1800-1865. These minutes reveal the social, political and religious activities of Quaker women and their wider importance to Canadian history. Supported by their religious faith, the women of the West Lake Monthly Meeting integrated themselves into the broader transatlantic network of women to end slavery. -- Author's abstract.
