Book excerpt: "In 1820 and 1821 a group of several thousand Scottish people moved into the New Lanark Settlement in Ontario, under the auspices of the British government. Many of them were unemployed weavers who had suffered hardship as a result of Britain's faltering economy following the end of the Napoleonic War. These people were given land in the townships of Dalhousie, Lanark, North Sherbrooke and Ramsay. They came to Upper Canada as members of more than forty emigration societies. In this book, Carol Bennett outlines the conditions which existed in Scotland at that time, the way in which this group emigration was handled and what the people found when they arrived in this country. The individual families have been listed, along with all available information about the ships they traveled on, place of origin, location in Lanark County and names of family members" -- Back cover.
