In America, he finds himself working as a game warden in Ontonagon County in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. The cold winters and the deep woods of the Upper Peninsula suit John well. He is happy living and working in the forest. Things grow more complex for John when millionaire Jacob Greenleaf offers him a job as Chief of Security for the Green Leaf Wildlife Refuge. John works hard to turn Green Leaf into a model tourist attraction to help the local economy recover from the Great Depression, but soon learns that weapons have been disappearing from several cabins at Green Leaf. John's investigation of the stolen weapons leads him to Angus McVey, the man he replaced as Chief of Security at Green Leaf. McVey's family has a history of desperate poverty and was long oppressed by the Scottish gentry at their original home on the Isle of Skye. After a lifetime of anger and bitterness, McVey vows to take revenge on Jacob Greenleaf, the American equivalent of the gentry that held his family down for so long, and John Ziegler, the man who took his livelihood. McVey takes to the woods with a bow and arrows and stalks John throughout the forests of Green Leaf, bent on eliminating John. In George Nilsen's gripping novel, The Green Leaf Retrofit, John will have to call on all of his experiences and knowledge to rid Green Leaf of McVey so the resort can provide the economic boost the county desperately needs.
