As admitted it comprised not only its present area but West Virginia and Kentucky. Kentucky was set off and admitted as an independent State June 1, 17 92. During the civil war the counties forming what is now the State of West Vir ginia were admitted to the Union as an independent State, the admis sion taking effect June 19, 1863.
