Book excerpt: An analysis of the changing ideology of Hezbollah from its foundation to the present moment, this book charts Hezbollah's trajectory from resistance/terrorist group to domestic political player and key belligerent in the Syrian War. The book draws upon interviews with Hezbollah officials and their opponents, combined with a theoretical approach grounded in International Relations, to assess the development of the group from non-state actor to an increasingly embedded political group. It argues that policy shifts in relation to Israel, participation in democracy, commitment to theocracy, and supporting patron-states (Syria, Iran) show that the organisation is fundamentally pragmatic and oriented by interest, shifting its ideology where necessary to suit its pragmatic goals.
