Book excerpt: Excerpt from Psychology Applied to the Art of Teaching It is said that, in some of the engagements in a war lately waged, tons of ammunition were used, and yet only comparatively few of the combatants were killed or wounded. It was not merely an instance of poor marksmanship on a large scale, for a war correspondent reported that the majority never aimed at all, and many had even removed the "sights" from their rifles as inconveniences. In the great educational army, in its campaign against ignorance, do we not find similar conditions and a like waste of the infinitely more valuable ammunition of life forces and life energies, all for want of "aim." This volume is intended to assist the young educational recruits, while they are engaged in target practice in the training institutes. It is written by one experienced in teaching and in training teachers, for the special benefit of untrained and inexperienced beginners in the noble profession of teaching. Instead of giving many rules without reasons, it seeks to lead the young teacher to such a knowledge of the laws of mental growth that he may be able to draw up intelligently his own rules for the successful prosecution of his calling as an educator.
