Book excerpt: This study explores the emergence and evolution of modern entrepreneurship in the context of a small developing nation largely cut off from outside contact until only 40 years ago. The author, an American scholar with extensive direct experience of life and work in Nepal, first examines the ethnic, religious and family background of the country's entrepreneurs, seeking to explain why certain minority communities--the Marwaris, the Sherpas, Tibetan refugees based in Nepal, and others--have proved particularly successful in adopting an entrepreneurial culture. The factors which lie behind the decline of the Newars as Nepal's foremost entrepreneurial community are also explored. There follows an analysis of the major problems encountered by Nepal-based entrepreneurs, especially in relation to the State (which, during the period of research for this book, was dominated by the monarchy). The study raises questions about the relationship between government and private sector that seem certain to figure prominently on Nepal's national agenda as the country develops under its new democratic dispensation.
