Each drawing is accompanied by insightful commentary from William L. Beiswanger, Monticello's Robert H. Smith Director of Restoration. Jefferson began Monticello in 1768 at the age of twenty-five and continued altering his "essay in Architecture" until his death in 1826. This work outlines the changes Jefferson made to his residence, which evolved from six to twenty-one rooms.
