Book excerpt: Excerpt from Later Speeches on Political Questions: With Select Controversial Papers The following speeches deal with questions of current American politics from 1871 to 1889, and they embody, to some extent, the political history of the country during this period. The greater part of them will particularly interest the surviving associates and friends of the men who withdrew from the Republican party in 1872, and thenceforward remained outside of its fold; for they set forth with clearness and force the reasons which prompted them to this memorable revolt against organized intolerance and political greed, and made their return impossible. Although the party still lives, it has completely outlasted the causes which produced it and made it a necessity, while in the clear mirror of history and the light of existing facts it is now seen that the old rallying-cry of "reform within the party" was a false pretense and a mischievous delusion. The controversial papers which follow the speeches sufficiently disclose the occasion for writing them, and fairly indicate the character and material points of the articles to which they reply. The historical paper which closes the volume is one of numerous magazine articles, and is reprinted because it deals with a vital political question, and is believed to be a real contribution to the truth of history.
