Book excerpt: Excerpt from Judgment in Literature In nearly all large towns, and especially in the capital cities of civilized nations, there are collections of statues, pictures, and books. Even in the streets we see the forms of men and women, wrought in marble or cast in bronze, placed high upon pedestals to meet the gaze of every one who may pass by them. In nearly every house there are pictures upon the walls, and vases or other ornaments arranged upon shelves, and books lying on the table; and in large houses there are whole chambers set apart solely for collections of pictures and statuary, or lined with rows of books. The mere existence of these objects shows us that Art is an element in the life of civilized man, for we should not care to surround ourselves with such things, unless we wished our minds to be sometimes occupied both with them and with the thoughts which they suggest. Criticism is the exercise of judgment in the province of Art and Literature, and the Critic is a person who is possessed of the knowledge necessary to enable him to pronounce right judgments upon the merit or worth of such works as come within this province.
