Each report consists of the common and Latin names; short sections on description, similar species, distribution and habitat (including a shaded map of counties of distribution), early stages, larval host plants, adult energy sources, flight period, and general comments; and prints from photographs showing (at least) an upper view of a male, one of a female, and an under view of one. The end material includes a checklist of South Dakota butterflies, a butterfly calendar, and a hypothetical list [butterflies which might live in the state, but which have not yet been recorded].
