Whilst you live without God in the world, you are the continual sport of fortune, and a prey to the injustice, the malignity, and the evil designs of men. Your unrestrained passions expose you to those of others, and your unbridled desires associate you in their crimes: Your pride and self-love (which are incompatible with those of your neighbour) foam and swell against opposition, like the billows of the angry ocean, and occasion you a thousand shipwrecks. You exist in constant warfare with all around you, and know not where to rest. Is this a state (even with worldly prosperity) to be preferred to the holy hope, the divine calm, the conscious trust in Providence, possessed by that soul, which, having renounced its self-love, and restrained its passions, walks humbly with its God?--View the world as it now is, and as it has ever been, and you will find, that, according as forgetfulness of God and irreligion prevail, such has been, and such will ever be, the evil state of society.
