Book excerpt: This study sought to understand the mechanisms explaining the differential influence of background characteristics, level of collegiate involvement, external factors of influence, and level of college satisfaction on time-to-completion of first-generation college students compared to their non-first-generation peers. The analysis was based on secondary data, taken from one mid-sized, rural, public 4-year institution, comprised of matching Beginning College Survey of Student Engagement (BCSSE), National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE), grade point average (GPA), retention, and graduation student information (N=401). Survival analysis techniques were used to explore the guiding research questions of whether there were differences between first generation and non-first-generation students. Based on the findings from the study it can be concluded that the extent of the difference in time-to-graduation between first-generation graduates and their non-first-generation peers is statistically significant. Further, background characteristics, level of collegiate involvement, amount of time exerted on outside factors, and college satisfaction do influence time-to-graduation rates differently for first-generation students as compared to their non-first-generation peers
