Book excerpt: We have rules how the words should be spelled, but we have never had standardisation of meanings. Such a standardisation is long overdue considering the rapid development of Natural Language Processing in general and natural language based Artificial Intelligence in particular. The word meanings presented in this book are the building blocks of natural language based artificial intellect. Because many words have the same meaning, a programmer would use a code for this meaning when making a rule, rather than listing each time the words that have it. The codes show the difference, the similarity or the identity between meanings. The codes connect words that mean the same thing but are spelled differently. Therefore a need has arisen to pin-point the meanings and to assign codes to them. The present book attempts to answer just this need. As such, it is more like a reference book, a type of dictionary of meanings, needed also in teaching lexical semantics to students at various levels.
