Book excerpt: Mixed metal oxides for catalytic methane combustion: This project explores the development of mixed metal oxides containing Pd for catalytic oxidation of low concentration CH4 for ventilation air methane (VAM) mitigation technologies targeted towards reducing green-house gas emissions from coal mines. The aim here is to reduce the loading of Pd in the catalytic materials by designing a bifunctional catalyst using a transition metal as the main component and Pd as a promoter. Using the bifunctional catalyst is not only expected to enhance the activity towards CH4 combustion but is also expected to increase the tolerance of the catalyst towards poisoning by water, thereby increasing the economic feasibility of this technology. The studies are designed to provide key insights into catalyst chemistry using in-situ characterization techniques that can be leveraged to increase the efficiency of lean methane combustion technologies.
