Book excerpt: The Daughters of Utah Pioneers, Uintah County Chapter Biographies were collected by this chapter of the Daughters of Utah Pioneers (DUP) for the centennial history of the Uinta Basin, Builders of Uintah (1947) though some of the files were collected afterwards. Present are both family and individual histories, as well as other histories that discuss the origins of local buildings, the development of area businesses (such as freighting and ranching), population groups (including the Ute Indians), the pre-Mormon history of Ashley Valley, the establishment of the LDS Church, social groups, and the development of local DUP chapters. The histories contained in the files document the settlement of Uintah Valley, Utah, which contains the towns of Vernal and Jensen, Utah, as well as many smaller communities, such as Maeser, Naples, Glines, Taft, Lapoint, and Ashley. The histories cover the period from the earliest settlement of the Uintah Valley in 1877, to 1947, although some are as recent as 1984.
