Book excerpt: The aim of this reader is twofold; on the one hand, it is designed as a companion volume to John Storey's An Introductory Guide to Cultural Theory and Popular Culture and on the other, as a free-standing, theoretical, analytical and historical introduction to the study of popular culture within cultural studies. The first six parts each contain a representative selection of readings from a particular approach to popular culture: culture and civilization tradition; culturalism; structuralism and post-structuralism; marxism; feminism and postmodernism. These sections chart the theoretical development of the study of popular culture within cultural studies and provide examples of the analysis of the texts and practices of popular culture from within each specific tradition. The final section contains readings from recent debates on the study of popular culture.
