Book excerpt: This research established a general framework for the convergence of a parameter estimation algorithm based on quasilinearization which applies to a class of distributed parameter systems described by linear dynamical systems. Conditions were established which guarantee local convergence of the identification algorithm. The algorithm was applied to delay and coefficient identification in systems of delay-differential equations. Such systems have been proposed as hereditary models of aeroelastic systems. A numerical identification algorithm was developed and tested for estimating parameters in a Volterra integral. equation arising from a viscoelastic model of a flexible structure with Boltzmann damping. In particular, one of the parameters identified was the order of the derivative in Volterra integro-differential equations containing fractional derivatives, a form of viscoelastic damping. A Galerkin approximation in the space variable was used to approximate the partial differential equation with memory by a system of integro-differential equations.
