Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The current meeting sponsored by the New York Academy of Sciences represents the first open meeting on the NPY family of peptides. We attempted to highlight several areas of NPY research, including an in-depth discussion of the structure of the native NPY molecule, which we hope will serve as a guide to aid in the development of analogues to assess the critical feature of the molecule essential for receptor binding and signal transduction. Emphasis was also placed on the molecule mechanisms regulating the expression of the genes encoding the peptides. Since NPY is concentrated in tissues affecting cardiovascular performance, attention was directed to the significance of NPY in regulating cardiac and renal function. Finally, much of our present knowledge of NPY has been derived from studies of NPY in neuronal systems. Presentations on the anatomy and physiology of NPY in higher brain centers are followed by an in- depth-review of the function of NPY in the hypothalamus, concentrating on feeding, reproduction and pituitary function.
