Book excerpt: The idea of this catalog came after an auspicious placement of these sculptures in museums of prehistoric archaeology in those regions of Italy where the sculptures were found. Their division into 12 types that were produced progressively over two million years is of use to scholars; it allows us to visually interpret the evolution of the human species as represented in the sculptures, as well as types of stone processing, the sculptures' meaning (as religious objects) and lastly, the evolution in stylistic deformation, that is artistic fashion.
