Born in the rural farming community of Middelburg, it's not until his late teens that Matthew moves to Cape Town, where he falls in love with Amanda. The couple gets serious fast, and when it is time for Matthew to decide whether to join the police, it is an easy choice: joining the police gives him a guaranteed career path that enables him to take care of his widowed mum and Amanda. After graduating from a training college, he's sent to the crime-ridden city of Johannesburg. As a result of his excellent service record, he's singled out for an elite training course, and although he's frequently in peril, he eventually returns to Cape Town and marries Amanda. Life seems perfect, but it unravels when he discovers a terrible betrayal that ends with him leaving South Africa and losing everything he'd worked so hard to accomplish.
