However the study of character development is severely lacking in real world applications based off this claim that can be made to support character development within the classroom. In an effort to bridge this gap, this paper reviews the history of character development in education, the history of athletics and its connection to education, athletic coaches who coach character within their players, and the current literature discussing the academic, social, and character development benefits that participation in interscholastic athletics brings. This review found three themes to be key in student character development. The role the coach plays, student athlete leadership, and student athlete accountability can all play a major role in student athlete character development. To move the benefits into the classroom, teachers and schools must: provide students opportunities for leadership, set a good example, and insist on student accountability.
