Book excerpt: Educational research indicates that instruction is more effective when students work in cooperative learning groups, rather than in situations where competition and individualistic learning are emphasized. Specific steps are provided in this guide to help teachers acquire the skills needed for cooperative learning. The five principles that underlie successful cooperative learning experiences (distributed leadership, heterogeneous grouping, positive interdependence, social skill acquisition, and group autonomy) are outlined, illustrated, and then followed by a discussion of how to implement them. Teachers are led through steps to help change the model to fit their situations. Topics discussed include the teacher's role during group work and social skills processing. Eight appendixes provide worksheets, forms, suggested rewards, and seven sample lesson plans for different subjects and grade levels. (MLF)
