Book excerpt: Research Question: What happens if I use Language Experience Approach to teach reading and writing in a Spanish class for native speakers? Research Activities: All the students who enrolled in Spanish for native speakers' class already speak Spanish as their first language, but often these students have had few opportunities to acquire written abilities in Spanish. These bilingual students typically enroll in Spanish for native speakers classes at the high school level, where they are taught about the grammar of Spanish, and how to write for personal as well as expository purposes. This inquiry research focused on an approach that teaches writing which draws from students' background to develop their written ideas. This way of teaching writing is called Language Experience Approach (LEA). The Language Experience Approach is an approach that uses students' oral language to develop their reading and writing skills. The purpose of the study was to analyze how using a version of the Language Experience Approach helps students improve their reading and writing skills in Spanish. The intervention was conducted with a small group of four students at different proficiency levels in Spanish, two high performing and two average performing. There were three different data sets collected: two surveys, three writing samples and several observational notes in the course of three weeks. The focus of the research was to examine the individual performance of each student using the LEA. The sub-questions were: What is the difference between their writing and reading of LEA and the textbook we use in the class? How will the production and comprehension differ between the two texts, LEA and the classroom textbook? Students writing and reading skills improved greatly from the first LEA story to the third LEA story, since they were able to incorporate their personal experiences to develop their literacy skills. Compared to textbook material, students engaged in and improved their sentence structure and descriptive detail with LEA activities. Grade Level: Secondary, 9-10. Subject: Spanish. Project Descriptor: Survey-Attitude, Observation-Field notes, Observation-Student Engagement, Writing Samples, Language Experience Approach.
