It consists of the main island of Saint Vincent and a chain of smaller islands known as the Grenadines. The country has a population of just over 100,000 people and its economy is largely dependent on agriculture, particularly bananas and coconuts, as well as tourism, offshore financial services, and fishing. The indigenous Carib people inhabited Saint Vincent before it was colonized by Europeans in the 18th century. The island became a British colony and was a major center for the production of sugar and other crops using enslaved labor. In 1979, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines gained independence from Britain and became a sovereign nation. Today, it is known for its beautiful beaches, tropical climate, and vibrant culture.
