He made 6 trips to India between 1630 and the 1668. He was a jeweler by profession, and made a considerable fortune by trading in precious stones from Asia and selling them in Europe. Tavernier traveled extensively in Persia, Afghanistan and India. This 2 volume work is a compilation of his 6 voyages and makes a fascinating read. He gives glowing accounts of the 2 Mughal kings whose court he visited, namely Shajahan and Aurangzeb.This work is full of rich detail. He describes all that he saw and experienced. He gives descriptions of his journey, the people, their customs and manners, their religion, the rituals, the politics and political relations with neighboring countries and he also give copious notices of the jewels and diamond mines in the south of India. A map of his travels in India is given in the book. This book is a reprint of the 1925 edition. It is translated from the original French edition of 1676 with a biographical sketch of the author, notes, appendices etc. by V. Ball, London 1889 and 2nd edition is edited by Crooke (Translation of the original French edition of 1676).
