Indonesian wheat imports could reach 1.9 million metric tons or more in 1985, depending upon whether the Government pursues an active policy of encouraging imports. The U.S. share of that market could be more than 1 million tons. Raising the price of rice is the most direct means by which the Indonesian Government can both lower the cost of imported food and reduce the country's reliance on the international rice market. The study examines recent trends in Indonesian wheat imports, current marketing and price mechanisms, and Government policy toward wheat.
