The book also details how a young woman, after meeting many of these people, changes her perceptions. Although she originally felt superior to homeless people, she learned that it could happen in her own family. Although names and places are fiction, the narratives are based on stories told to volunteers at shelters and on the street by men and women, some of whom were veterans, with no place to go. The largest homeless group consists of children. We hear stories of heroism and cowardice, laziness and ambition, spouse abuse and child abuse and stories of adults sacrificing everything to save a child. The homeless are not homogenous. Each story is different and each individual is unique.
