Twenty-three American Indian families in a rural Midwestern United States reservation were interviewed for the study. Two risk factors were identified as distinct to rural, low-income Native American families: the impact of drugs and alcohol, and stigma and discrimination (racism). Eleven protective factors were identified, the two distinctive to this same group were tribal assistance, and cultural pride and traditions. Structural solidarity was found to have the greatest impact on perceived family resiliency. --abstract.
