Book excerpt: Excerpt from Journal of the Punjab Historical Society, Vol. 5 Historians and annalists, whether Indian or European, have given graphic accounts of every thing which refers to the Mughal Emperors, and their imperial courts in India; but they have said little of the honourable work done by the Jesuit Missions in that realm; and such information as they give is vague and incomplete if not positively inaccurate. The original records are difficult of access, and few even of the histories published by the Jesuits themselves do more than relate in general terms the remarkable incidents which the original Litterae Annuae set forth. Mr. E. D. Maclagan's interesting article on 'The Jesuit Missions to the Emperor Akbar' published in the Journal of the Asiatic Society of Bengal (Vol. LXV, 1896, pp. 38-113), is a precious contribution to the true history of the Jesuit Missions and deals with the first part of their labours in the Mughal empire. But the history of Christianity in Northern India during the two centuries following Akbar's death has yet to be written. It is full of strange vicissitudes and curious episodes. Such as the story of John Philip Bourbon of Navarre, a scion of the French royal house, who, it is said, married Lady Juliana, sister of Akbar's Christian wife. The interesting account of Mirza Zu'l Qarnayn, a noble Armenian, a champion of the Christian religion and the chief supporter of the Jesuit Mission during the reigns of Jahangir, Shah Jahan and Aurangzeb. The fall and capture of Hugli, and the transportation of 4000 Christian prisoners to Agra and what happened to them, one of the saddest stories in the history of India, which has been likened to the Babylonian captivity of the Jews; the cordial relations which existed between Prince Dara Shikoh and Father Buzeo; the romantic history of Lady Thomazia Martins, who had charge of the royal table and was much liked by Roshanara Begum; and that of Lady Juliana Dias da Costa, who faithfully served Bahadur Shah during his twelve years' imprisonment. The Jesuit astronomical Mission to the Raja of Jaipur, Jay Singh II; and so forth. But let us not anticipate and let us see what the farm ns tell us, and I now make a first attempt with faltering hand, because of the magnitude of the task, to draw aside the curtain of oblivion that veils at present the annals of the Jesuit Missions in the Mughal empire.
