In the report "Construct for Excellence" of the Construction Industry Review Committee in January 2001, it indicated innovation implementation is required to deliver quality products in order to support the further development of our economy and to provide a better living environment for the population. Although some leading clients and construction organizations are increasingly encouraging learning and innovation within projects and seeking to make use of the process to gain competitive advantage, unfortunately, diffusion is very slow. Apart from the inherent factors of construction industry making it difficult to diffuse, Hong Kong's research into innovation was found to be lacking. Although this is a landmark development in construction, innovations introduced in the industry are rarely examined and evaluated in order to help provide strategic direction for the organizations involved or future projects. My research probably is one of the few attempt, through survey in case study to explore an overview of the status of innovation implementation in the Hong Kong construction industry. It was found that the innovation concept is not something new and there are actually some good practices of implementation in the local industry. This research presents an introduction to common types of innovation and their application to the construction industry through a review of the practices introduced in the development of Three Pacific Place, a prominent commercial building in Page 1 central Hong Kong. After close examination, some managerial concepts in strategic implementation were found commonly being practiced locally while some concepts were less applicable. Some major barriers to the implementation of innovation in the local context were also identified and evaluated in the research. I hope my findings in my dissertation can provide useful insights on the innovation that any organization, not simply those in the construction industry, can implement so as to improve performance in innovation implementation in project-based industry.
