Book excerpt: A brief history is presented of Indian tribes living along the eastern seaboard of the United States from the time of contact of these tribes with the first European settlers to the present day. Early Indian-white relationships are discussed, as well as relationships established between the various tribes themselves. An historical presentation of early Indian cultures and migration patterns is given on a state-by-state basis for each of 12 states on the Atlantic seaboard. These early histories are then contrasted with modern seaboard tribes. The presentation is concluded with a list of historical and cultural Indian sites. (DA).
