Book excerpt: Feature models represent parts in terms of high level, functionally significant entities such as holes, slots or pockets. Features can provide an additional layer of information in advanced Computer-Aided Design (CAD) systems to make them more useful for design and to integrate design with down stream applications. Feature extraction is the process of identifying feature information from the CAD models without comparing it with any predefined features' instances. This thesis deals with the development of a sequential form feature extraction procedure. A form feature is defined as a geometric formation on an object which can be associated with design/manufacturing information. There exist two main approaches to the identification of form-feature information from a CAD model. The first approach, feature recognition, requires a pre-defined instance of the form feature to be recognized.
