Book excerpt: In the twenty first century the prime hope of educated persons in India for jobs is in the sphere of Information Technology, which may take rapid strides under the leadership of the different states that are emphasizing the importance of Information Technology. At present there are nearly five lakhs people working in Information Technology as compared to the registered unemployed job seekers of about 4 crores (Narayana, 2004). Computer education at the school level is essential to enable children coming out of school to be computer literates and that acquiring basic knowledge in computers would be useful to them either in gaining employment or in pursuing higher studies (Human Development Report, 2003).The Indian economy grew at 5.9 per cent annually compared with the average of 2.8 per cent for the world between 1990 and 2002. The major contributor to this striking performance is India's thriving service sector, led by information technology (IT).
