Book excerpt: Excerpt from 1959 Proceedings of the One Hundred and Fifty-Fifth Annual Convention of the United Evangelical Lutheran Synod of North Carolina Challenging words were spoken by the president as described below. One of the first words Of the Risen Christ was a rebuke, spoken to the two fleeing disciples on their way to Emmaus at the close Of that first Easter Day. They had forsaken all hope that it was He who had come to redeem Israel. They couldn't reconcile their ideas of a messianic king with any such thing as suffering and humiliation and death on a cross and were hushed, humbled, and harrassed even at the sight and smell of blood. But later in the evening their eyes were Opened as He Opened unto them the Scriptures. Instead of referring to special passages, the presi dent said, He removed the veil and showed unto them the Old Testa ment Scriptures in their beauty and glory as they found fulfillment in Him. Jesus followed them, and then they followed Him, running back to Jerusalem, and joining the company of the inner circle of disciples as witnesses of the Resurrection, the President continued, in making a forceful application Of reclaiming the lapsed. He concluded by saying: We must walk and talk and dine with them until their hearts burn within. Holy Communion was administered to 277 communicants, including clerical, lay delegates and Visitors.
