Book excerpt: This is a study of the development of the Mexican Revolution between 1910 and 1914 and the associated diplomatic conflict which arose between Britain and the United States. The agreement on this issues that was reached between Britain and the United States formed an important part of their relationship at the beginning of the First World War. Dr Calvert examines the relationship between British and American oil companies in Mexico and the way in which this was reflected in the underlying assumptions of British and American diplomatic action. The British side of the conflict is examined in detail from original documentary sources. The author presents information and an interpretation of key events in the rise and fall of the Madero and Huerta governments. His study is an assessment of the policy of the Taft Administration in Mexico and is therefore an important contribution to an understanding of President Wilson's inheritance.
