Book excerpt: Excerpt from How to Teach Reading and Composition The purpose in the mind of the writer and compiler of this little book is to produce something which will help the teacher to prepare for the daily work of the schoolroom, at least the very important part of it embraced in the long labor of training boys and girls to read and to write the English language. In his opinion, the results in these twin lines of educational work are not at all equal to those in some other lines much less important than these. Judging from his experience and observation as a teacher and supervisor of reading classes, and trusting also to the judgment of teachers who have knowledge of the mode of presenting the subject as here given, the author believes that these discussions and lessons will be helpful. While they indicate methods, they do so by treating a number of pieces of literature either commonly found in books for reading, or eminently worthy of a place therein. He asks of his readers a little patience, while he examines the results of the time expended on reading and composition in our elementary schools; he has made bold to point out defects and to suggest what seem to be remedies.
